The Golden Girls
What Makes The Golden Girls So Good?
The Golden Girls aired from 1985 to 1992 on NBC and remains one of television's most beloved sitcoms. The show follows four older single women—Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White), Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty)—who share a home in Miami, Florida. Over seven seasons and 180 episodes, these fierce, funny women navigated friendship, aging, love, and daily life with wit, warmth, and an endless supply of cheesecake.
Why The Golden Girls Endures
The show broke ground in multiple ways that still resonate today. It was one of the first sitcoms to tackle taboo topics like menopause, ageism, sexual harassment, Alzheimer's disease, chronic pain, and assisted suicide. The series also addressed LGBTQ+ themes and the AIDS crisis with compassion and honesty, earning a devoted following in the queer community.
But beyond its progressive storylines, The Golden Girls offers something we all crave: authentic friendship. The bond between these four women—built on loyalty, acceptance, and unconditional love—shows us what chosen family looks like. They accept each other completely, whether Rose is being naive, Blanche is being bold, Dorothy is being sharp, or Sophia is delivering her trademark cutting wisdom. The show reminds us that someone who won't abandon you, no matter what, is a gift.
The series also challenged ageist stereotypes by portraying older women as complex, active, sexual beings with dreams and desires. These weren't doddering caricatures—they were dancing, working out, pursuing careers, and having vibrant romantic lives. For millennials and Gen Z viewers discovering the show decades later, it offers comfort and a vision of supportive relationships in a world that often feels disposable.
The Golden Girls Tarot Deck
8 of Swords - The Golden Girl Tarot Deck
The Golden Girls Tarot is a delightful tribute to this iconic show, created by Chantel de Sousa. Based on the classic Rider-Waite structure, the deck assigns each Golden Girl her own suit: Dorothy represents Swords, Rose represents Cups, Blanche represents Pentacles, and Sophia represents Wands. The 78-card deck includes both the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, with imagery drawn directly from memorable episodes and moments from the series.
Tarot enthusiasts who love the show will connect with these cards on a deeper level. The Major Arcana is particularly inspired, opening with Rose as The Fool in her CATS costume and featuring clever references like Shady Pines as The Tower. Each card brings the wisdom and humor of the show into the tarot reading experience, making it perfect for both new and experienced readers.
Weekly Tarot: The 8 of Swords
Speaking of the deck, this week's Tarot card is the 8 of Swords and Ive chosen it from the Golden Girls Tarot. In traditional Tarot, the Eight of Swords depicts a blindfolded woman surrounded by swords, representing self-imposed mental restrictions. The card warns us when our thoughts and beliefs are no longer serving us—when we're overthinking, focusing only on worst-case scenarios, or trapping ourselves in limiting patterns.
The powerful message of this card is that the prison is often in our own minds. Like the blindfolded figure who could simply remove the blindfold and walk free, we have more options than we realize. The Eight of Swords asks us to release victim mentality, take back our power, and recognize that we do have choices—even if we don't like all of them.
This card invites us to shift from limiting beliefs to empowered thinking. When you choose sovereignty over victimhood, you become the wielder of your own choices. Your intuition can see what your anxious mind cannot. It's time to step out of your head, change the narrative, and open your eyes to the path forward. Nice huh?
